Tap Into Teen Minds

This website contains an ample amount of resources for the mathematics classroom. In particular, there is a 3-part video series made available that is all about spiraling. These videos are available for download by inputting your name and email. The first video is “What is Spiraling and Why We Should do it”. This video provides a comprehensive background that defines spiraling and gives a coherent rationale for spiraling. The second video, “6 Steps to Spiraling Your Math Class”, is a great resource for getting started and considering how to plan and how to assess. This will prepare teachers for creating long-range plans for the school year. The third video, “9 Spiraling Starter Strategies” may seem like an extended version of the second video, but it is so much more than that. This video provides specific teaching strategies that can be used to effectively teach and assess in a spiraled classroom.

PROS:

The videos in the spiraling series are very clear and comprehensive. They provide teachers with the necessary background and a solid strategy to move forward with spiraling. The website itself provides access to various digital manipulatives which could be useful for schools or classrooms that do not have many physical manipulatives available. Additionally, under the ‘Resources’ tab, teachers can find access to various Rich Task activities that could be used within their spiraled program.

CONS:

While the videos do provide glances at long-range plans completed both digitally and on paper for spiraling, the site does not provide these plans for all grade levels as EduGains or MathUp does. There are also no specific lesson plans given for spiraling, only access to some activities as noted above. Furthermore, the website has quite a few pop-ups that could become frustrating. Fortunately, these pop-ups are all related to math education and comes from the site itself as opposed to being randomized advertisements from the Internet.
